Projects Inspired by Maine Historical Events + Architecture

Look to the Fire

In 1866 Portland was leveled by the worst conflagration of its time. 150 years later, Look to the Fire reflects on that inconceivable event while exploring the limitations of collective memory, current feelings of insecurity in our changing city, and Portland’s unwavering sense of place.

Installation of handset, letterpress printed broadside posters featuring text from period newspaper articles; and a shadow puppet performance telling the extraordinary story of The Great Fire and the city that grew from its ashes.
